Vision/Mission/Values

Once your planning team is in place and your timetable is determined, you can start defining your goal, vision, and values—or, if you already have these statements, revising them.

Do not mix up mission and vision if you want to get through this phase quickly. Vision is a statement about your preferred state, where you want to go, and is best stated in the future tense.

Your mission is a statement about your essential purpose, the reason you exist. While values may be sprinkled throughout both your purpose and vision, an effective values statement outlines the governing principles of your organization and the interactions and behavior you desire from your personnel. Take the time to consider these three points because they form the basis of a successful strategic plan.
