Schedule Periodic Reviews
Because each project is unique, precise planning more than a few months in advance is challenging. Depending on the project type, reviews every three to six months, aligned with the planning horizon, allow for essential project plan development revisions.
While weekly status gathering, performance reporting, and integrated change control are all vital, they fall short on longer projects. The project is given the equivalent of planned preventative maintenance through periodic evaluations.
Project reviews are most useful at natural project transitions:
- Life-cycle or phase transitions
- Major milestones or checkpoints
- Following significant project changes
- When new members are either added to or leaving project staff
Schedule periodic assessments to assess progress toward objectives and plans, as well as how program monies were spent. The objectives should be examined and altered based on program performance, client expectations, new benchmarks, new technology, firmwide performance, or other circumstances.
